No 35th Breda Singelloop in 2021
Following today’s Dutch cabinet’s press conference regarding the coronavirus, the board of the ‘De Bredase Singelloop’ has decided that the 35th edition of the AMGEN Singelloop Breda will not take place this year.
During the press conference, Prime Minister Rutte indicated that the 1.5 meter measure may be lifted as of September 20. Certainty about this, however, will not be given before September 13th. If the 1.5 meter measure is to be released, there will be additional measurements for events like access control and a maximum of 750 participants and visitors. “For the largest one-day event in Breda, with approximately 20,000 participants and 85,000 supporters, relatives, fans and other visitors, we will not be able to adhere to any of these conditions.” says chairman Willem Butz of the foundation.
“We have been busy preparing for months. Following the press conference of the Dutch Gouvernment, we unfortunately had to conclude that the chance of a ‘normal Singelloop’ is nil. By canceling the 2021 edition now, we can cancel our obligations to suppliers free of charge and we are not chasing extra costs for our sponsors.” according to Butz
“It is a sad situation, but we don’t think it’s responsible to make a different decision now” adds Communication & PR board member Flip Kitslaar. “We would rather have organized a great anniversary edition, but we will ‘just’ postpone the lustrum edition of the Singelloop for another year and so celebrate it in 2022”
Butz continues. “We will discuss with our partners and sponsors as soon as possible and of course the registration fees will be 100% refunded to those who have already registered. After all, that was our promise to the early bidders!”
No Alternative Bredase Singelloop
There will also be no repeat of the alternative edition in 2021. “Last year we were able to surprise Breda with an innovative element in the form of the ‘Alternative Singelloop Breda & Omstreken’ with our newly developed Experience App. The participants ran or walked with this app from their own front door, their own chosen distance. Under the motto ‘Not en masse, but together en masse!’ nearly 4,000 participants from all over the world took part. Unfortunately, as a volunteer organization we can no longer conjure up a new trick for this year.” Kitslaar sighs disappointed.
Lustrum edition shifts to 2022
Despite the disappointment within the board, the focus is already towards next year. “Three times a charm: the 35th edition of the AMGEN Singelloop Breda will therefore be postponed to Sunday, October 2, 2022.” adds chairman Butz. “This year we saw a huge increase in the number of registrations compared to the record year 2018. Of course everyone is welcome again in 2022. We are going for a spectacular anniversary edition. Registrations will open on May 1st!”
