Bredase Singelloop Foundation board quits and holds talks on future event
Breda, Nov. 29, 2025

After 38 years full of running pleasure, sporting highlights and Breda sociability, the board of the Stichting Bredase Singelloop, which consists entirely of volunteers, has decided to disband the Stichting Bredase Singelloop. It no longer considers it responsible to continue organizing an event, of this size, on a voluntary basis in this day and age. For the continuity of the Breda Singelloop, the board is exploring the possibilities of whether specialized, professional parties can take over the organization of the Breda Singelloop. Should there be no possibility to continue the Breda Singelloop, this means that the 38th edition in 2025 will have been the last edition.

Breda Singelloop grown into an event of national scale
The Singelloop has changed in 38 years, the world has also changed. Society is changing and hardening. The risk of incidents with large material and financial impact and that affect the safety of people themselves has increased substantially. Government requirements for safety, crowd management, traffic measures in an ever-changing downtown, communications and medical facilities are increasing.

Willem Butz, chairman Bredase Singelloop Foundation: “We take this decision with pain in our hearts, but also with a sense of responsibility. The Breda Singelloop has grown into a large and complex event. The question we have asked ourselves is whether it is responsible in this day and age to continue organizing an event of this size on a voluntary basis. Our honest answer to that is: no.”

Breda tradition with thousands of runners

In nearly four decades, the Breda Singelloop has become a fixture on the Dutch running calendar. In 2025, over 25,000 participants were at
the start. Every year, thousands of runners, supporters and spectators enjoy the atmosphere along the canals and in the city center.

This makes the Singelloop a calling card for Breda. Participants and supporters come to the city from all over the country, sponsors gladly commit themselves to the event, and in recent years they even competed for national titles in the half marathon.

Intention to ensure continuity of the Breda Singelloop

The board stops and wishes the Breda Singelloop to continue. The board is therefore conducting exploratory talks with specialized, professional parties. Together with important stakeholders, such as the municipality of Breda and sponsors, it is being examined whether and – if so – how the event can be continued in a future-proof manner. The members of the board are happy to make their knowledge and expertise available for this purpose.

Should there be no possibility to continue the Breda Singelloop, it means that the 38th edition in 2025 will have been the last edition.

Proud of what has been accomplished and appreciative of everyone who contributed

The board looks back on the past 38 years with gratitude and pride.

“What has been achieved in 38 years, we owe to thousands of volunteers, sponsors and tens of thousands of participants and spectators,” said Willem Butz “The municipality of Breda has also been a committed partner all these years. With everyone, we have made the Breda Singelloop what it is today.”
